The model is the smallest part of an AI agent that does real work. Around it sits the harness: the tools it may call, what it must ask before calling them, what it remembers, how much it may spend, when it runs, and the record of what it did. Two products on the same model behave nothing alike because their harnesses differ.
Coding harnesses are built for one job: change a repository while a developer watches. Running a business is a different job with different risks. Money moves, customers get answered, the live site changes and nobody is watching at 3am. This page lists what a business harness has to hold, and how to test one.
Shopping for the product rather than the architecture? The best AI business builder: twelve tests (read 2026-11-02) is the buyer version of this page.
Coding harness or business harness
A coding harness gives one agent a terminal, a file tree and a way to show you a diff. Its safety model is the developer reviewing the change. That works because the developer is there, and because a bad change is a revert away.
A business harness runs several agents on a schedule with nobody reviewing each step. Its safety model has to be in the harness itself: what each agent may do, what needs a yes, what money it may spend, what counts as finished and what gets written down. A coding agent placed in charge of a company without those parts is a workshop left unlocked.
What a business harness has to hold
Roles with their own tools
Engineering, marketing, support and finance each get the tools their job needs and no others. A support agent that can change the live code is a harness bug.
Approval rules the owner sets
Ask about everything, ask only about important things, or work on its own within limits. The rule decides, not the agent's mood, and the request shows exactly what will happen.
Spend limits checked before the call
Budgets enforced before money or credits are committed, not reported afterwards. Stopping at zero should stop the work and keep the site up.
Memory of the owner
A preference stated once is known by every agent from then on, with a record of who said it.
A schedule it does not choose alone
Agents wake on a cadence and when something happens, such as a sale or an email, so work continues without prompts and without running away.
Proof before done
Finished means something the platform can verify: a release that built and answers on the real address, a published article, a completed task. A claim is not proof.
Data it did not invent
Figures come from the systems that recorded them, such as the payment provider, the site's own counter or Google Search Console, and missing data is shown as unknown.
A record you can read
Every run as a transcript: what each agent read, decided, called and changed, and what it cost.
Three shapes people call a harness
| Shape | Who supervises | What it is good for | What it leaves to you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coding harness | A developer, live | Changing a repository you already run | Hosting, payments, marketing, support, spend |
| Agent framework or SDK | Your own code | Building your own agent product | Everything above, plus the harness itself |
| Business harness inside a company operator | Rules you set once, and approvals when they apply | A company that keeps running after launch | Decisions only you should make |
How to test a harness in a trial
Approval
Set it to ask about important things, then trigger a spend above your limit. The request should reach you with the exact action and wait.
Spend
Let the credits run low. Work should stop before the balance goes negative, the site should stay up, and you should be told once.
Memory
Tell one agent a preference, then ask another to do related work. The second should already follow it.
Proof
Ask an agent to mark something done that did not happen. The harness should refuse.
Record
Open any run and follow it from the message that started it to the change it made.
Where Empyre fits
Empyre is a business harness and the company it runs in one product. Eight executives (CEO, CTO, CMO, CFO, CLO, CSO, Creative and Tester) each work with their own tools inside the same rules: the owner's approval setting, spend checked before it happens, memory of what the founder said, schedules plus triggers such as a paid sale or an incoming email, and a live transcript of every run.
Finished means verified: a release counts only when the exact commit built and the company's own address answers with it, and an SEO change is closed only on proof the platform can see, then measured a month later against the whole site. Figures come from the records that hold them, from Stripe to Google Search Console, and what was not reported is shown as unknown.
Head-to-head comparisons with named products, each with its sources and the day they were read, are on the comparison pages.
Common questions
What is an AI agent harness?
The runtime around a model: the tools it can call, what it must ask first, what it remembers, how much it may spend, when it runs and the record of what it did.
Can I run a business on a coding harness?
You can build one, then you become the scheduler, the spend limit and the approver. A business harness holds those parts itself.
Is Empyre a harness or an AI business builder?
Both. The harness is how its eight executives work safely; the business builder is what they produce and keep running.
